In Italy over 6 million women have been subjected to physical or sexual violence at least once in their lifetime. In 2014, 152 women were victims of femicide, 117 of them were killed within the private sphere of the home. In most cases this crime is committed by their husbands, partners or ex. Men who murder women are motivated by jealousy or possessiveness. This tragic issue persists despite new laws. Anti violence centers, spread out all over the country, provide healing, counseling and psychological support to women and girls who are subject to violence. Staff and volunteers offer practical help to victims: they ensure women and girls gain control over their lives and helping them feel less isolated and overcome their fears.
